Trey Lance of the 49ers missed the game after a broken finger on the Raiders helmet

Santa Clara-Coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Monday that rookie quarterback Trey Lance has a broken finger and will be absent for at least next week.

In Sunday’s preseason victory over the Raiders, Lance’s right hand hit the helmet of the Raiders guard.

“This is a microchip with bones falling off. This is a chip break, worse than jam, why doesn’t it heal on its own,” Shanahan said on a media conference call. “He can’t take pictures right now. We will rest for 7 days and hope he will be better when he starts training next Monday.”

Shanahan said that the injury will not affect the 49ers’ preparations for the opening game of the regular season in Detroit on September 12, and the preparations will not begin until next Monday. In other words, the 49ers will train on Wednesday and Thursday, and then they and each NFL team will get a three-day weekend.

In Sunday’s 34-10 victory over the Raiders in the first two series, Lance alternated with current starter Jimmy Gallopolo. After that, Lance played down what he initially thought was a stuck finger, until subsequent tests showed that it was not.

“To be honest, I don’t even remember what happened,” Lance said after the game. “But I think I stuck it on a helmet or something. But yes, no, I’m not worried.

“Of course, see how it feels tomorrow. I think it will tell a little more, but yes, don’t worry too much.”

Since Lance ended his North Dakota career in just one game last year, Shanahan has been working hard to accelerate his development, including adding him to a potential rotation with Gallopolo. Lance scored 11 of 24 steals in the two offenses that opened on Sunday, the first of which ended with Gallopolo’s touchdown and the second with his own touchdown.
