Tropical jungle inside a New York building

One of the reasons New York City is so widely recognized around the world is for its iconic buildings.

And it is that the ‘Big Apple’ can lay claim to many of the world’s most iconic buildings such as the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center, the Chrysler Building, Trump Tower, Rockefeller Center, the old Twin Towers, and more. others.

However, New York has been trying and redefining its distinctive architecture during the last decades so that the new buildings have a more contemporary and daring touch.

This is the reason why new skyscrapers have taken design as an essential element to renew the image of the city. One of the examples is the Ford Foundation Headquarters building, which is one of the greatest examples to follow in terms of corporate architecture.

It is a twelve-storied building with the peculiarity of having a forest inside, a fact that has attracted the attention of both businessmen, architects and tourists.

Ford’s architectural concept

In 1963, the Ford Foundation hired architect Kevin Roche and engineer John Dinkeloo to design plans for its new headquarters in New York. At that time the newly created United Nations (UN) building was built, and having the building nearby, it had to live up to the design and importance that the East River Docks had begun for the area.

However, the purpose of the building was to be reproduced in New York, “to receive and administer funds for scientific, educational and charitable purposes for the public good”, Edsel Ford, the entity’s creator, stated in the founding act.

Being a non-profit organization, the Foundation had a focus on funding projects whose objectives were to fight against Multidimensional poverty, promote education, educate on human rights and strengthen the development of the arts.

The building is designed for its large common areas to be a place for interaction and convergence.

The headquarters was completed in 1967 and the result was a building just over 40 meters high, which completely eschews the skyscraper image. Their space is focused on being a place where the main focus is people interaction.

However, Roche and Dinkeloo wanted to bring much of the concentrated nature in Central Park into the building, thus creating a mini forest inside the building And, therefore, within the cement, metal, and glass that exists in every traditional New York building to the present day sun.

It also has comfortable spaces so that people with physical disabilities can move around in peace.

The paradox of being a silent forest found within the chaos of the big city turned out to be the perfect excuse for peace and contact with nature to explain day-to-day life and the euphoria that comes with it.

The forest is complemented by a courtyard that serves as a greenhouse in the building, which is linked with the offices and exterior of the property thanks to a crystallized structure.

The contrast of peace and nature in the middle of a city like New York is the charm of this building.

Despite the fact that a skyscraper can measure hundreds of meters and dazzle the eye with its grand appearance, they are nothing more than traditional space-filled structures stacked one on top of the other, losing a bit of impressionism.

However, a small building of barely 12 floors, inaugurated in 1968, is still functioning today. And it has become one of those places that any tourist should visit, yes or no, in the capital of the world.

The simple fact that a small building, comparable in size to a Gothic cathedral, can command attention among towering constructions of cement and concrete can mean a way out of the monotony one can become accustomed to in a city. And may be almost blind to the majority. of New Yorkers.
