Donald Trump is reportedly growing increasingly annoyed with one potential challenger in 2024 for the Republican presidential nomination: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“He says DeSantis has no personal charisma and has a boring personality,” one unnamed source told Axios.
While several potential 2024 Republican candidates have publicly said they won’t seek the nomination if Trump runs for a third time, DeSantis is not one of them.
“I wonder why this guy doesn’t say he won’t run against me,” Trump reportedly told his colleagues, according to the New York Times.
That lack of deference seems to have led to Trump’s attacks on “weak-willed” politicians last week in what many believe were thinly veiled attacks on DeSantis.
The moment came during an interview with the far-right One America News, in which the former president said he had been revaccinated against the coronavirus and urged GOP politicians who had also been vaccinated but won’t admit it:
“They don’t want to say it because they are weak-willed,” Trump said. “You have to say it – whether you had it or not, say it.”
DeSantis is one of those who evaded answering.
The Times reported that Trump is particularly unhappy as he believes his early support helped DeSantis win the 2018 governorship and that DeSantis “had no chance” in the race without the help of the then president.
Trump allies warned DeSantis not to test the former president.
Last year, Roger Stone said he could spoil DeSantis’ bid for re-election this year by running against him as the Libertarian candidate… but would back off if DeSantis promised not to run against Trump in 2024.
Trump himself has publicly stated that he is not worried.
“If I faced him, I would beat him just like everyone else,” he told Yahoo News last year, adding that he didn’t expect DeSantis to run at the end: “I think most people dropped out.” I think he would drop out of school.”
DeSantis has not said if he intends to run for president.
