In his speech during a political rally in South Carolina on Saturday, Trump mentioned a conversation with a NATO official, without specifying who.

“One of the presidents of a great country stood up and said, 'Okay sir, if we don't pay and Russia attacks us, will you protect us?'” before revealing his answer to the great man. Said: “No, I won't do that.” Protect them, in fact I would encourage (Russia) to do whatever they want. They have to repay their debts.

The statement comes after Trump, President Joe Biden's potential rival in the November election, pressured Republican lawmakers in Congress to pass a bill that included aid for Ukraine.

The White House's response Saturday through its spokesman, Andrew Bates, was: “It is appalling and deranged for a murderous regime to encourage attacks on our closest allies.”

“Instead of calling for war and promoting anarchy, President Biden will continue to support American leadership,” the spokesperson said.
