Two injured in explosion, massive fire in Meriwale Road building

Two people are being treated for injuries after a building exploded and caught fire on Meriwale Road on Thursday afternoon.

Flames and black smoke could be seen billowing out of the Eastway Tank building on Merivale Road, south of Slack Road, around 1:30 p.m.

Ottawa fire officials say 911 callers heard an explosion before seeing flames rising 50 feet through the roof of a structure.

Witnesses told CTV News Ottawa that they heard several explosions at the time of the fire.

Count Tim Tierney says he was meters from where the fire broke out in a city in Ottawa.

“I actually thought it was an earthquake at first. The ground was shaking and then all of a sudden, a few seconds later, all of a sudden I heard a bang,” said Tierney on Ottawa Now of Newstalk 580 CFRA with Christy Cameron.

Paul Hutt, the acting chief of the Ottawa Fire Service, told reporters that 911 received several 911 calls about a fire at a commercial building on Merivale Road.

“There were reports of strong flames and smoke coming from the building,” Hutt said on Wednesday afternoon.

Hutt said firefighters announced a third alarm, meaning 30 to 40 resources within the service were deployed to the scene.

“The personnel rushed to the location in an attempt to control the fire, but the weight of the fire and the position of the fire determined that they had to go on a defensive attack,” Hutt said.

Paramedics say two people who were in the building at the time of the fire have been taken to hospital with unidentified injuries.

Mayor Jim Watson said on Twitter that there was a “serious situation” following an explosion at the Eastway tank on Merivale Road.

“My immediate concern is for the employees who have been affected by this fire,” Watson said.

According to the company’s website, Eastway Tanks, Pumps & Meter Ltd. is a custom manufacturer of tank trucks for both the North American and international markets.

Merivale Road is closed between West Hunt Club and MacFarlane Road. Slack Road turns east onto Woodruff.
