Authorities say the arrests are the result of a drug investigation at 2707 Morris Avenue in the Kingsbridge neighborhood, home to Divino Niño Daycare.
According to initial investigations, it remains unclear how the children came into contact with the opioids to which they were exposed over a long period of time on Friday.
1-year-old baby dead and three other minors hospitalized after incident at Bronx daycare
Emergency calls from the Divino Niño daycare center
Authorities responded to 911 calls last Friday reporting that two minors had suffered cardiac arrest and found two children at the scene who were taken to an emergency hospital in critical condition; one of them died shortly afterwards.
Two other minors were hospitalized, but no information was given about their condition.
Initial suspicion was that there was a carbon monoxide leak in the building where the Divino Niño daycare center is located. However, this was abolished shortly afterwards.
At least one of the children had a reaction to Narcan, the drug used to treat overdoses.
“This crisis is real and a real wake-up call for people who have opioids or fentanyl in their homes. “Our hearts are broken for the families affected,” New York Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference.
“Just exposure (to this drug) is fatal to an adult and extremely fatal to a child,” the mayor added.
