Two to the Loons, two to the Loons for Sporting KC on Wednesday

Minnesota United’s top two attackers are expected to return from injury on Wednesday’s match against Sporting Kansas City, but two Loones central midfielders are now on the injury list.

Manager Adrian Heath said on Tuesday that top scorer Robin Laud and primary distributor Emanuel Reynoso would be relegated to some level versus Casey at Children’s Mercy Park. Both players took part in rondo (keep-away) practice during Tuesday’s training session in Blaine, the best indication in a light training session that they are close to coming back.

“I think it might be a little early to start, but we would certainly expect to give them a few minutes – which will be a big positive for us because they are two big players for us,” Heath said.

The addition of Lod and Reynoso should promote a steady attack. Minnesota (8-7-7) lost 1-0 to the Seattle Sounders on Saturday – the Loons’ third game without a score in the last five.

On the other hand, two midfielders are out: Hasani Dotson and Jan Gregus. Dotson has a problem with his knee coming out of a Sounders game, but Heath said the club hopes to be available on Saturday against the LA Galaxy at Allianz Field. On August 17, in a 1–1 clash with San Jose, Gregus suffered a leg injury and it continued to haunt him.

The new absence comes on top of captain Ozzy Alonso being suspended on Wednesday for hoarding cards. Will Trapp and Jacori Hess are expected to be in the starting midfield against second-place Sporting (12-5-7).

The Loons have parted ways with Damien Roden, the club’s senior director of sports science. United have recently suffered a series of training-related injuries, and on top of Roden’s departure last week, the club are looking to adjust some of their practice routines. Roden, previously with the Wales national team and the Seattle Sounders, was hired in March.
