UAI Scientist Proposes Creating Smart Windows With Nanotechnology To Curb Climate Change

The global emergency of climate change keeps the scientific world upside down sustainable solutions to mitigate the rise in temperature and the potential impact on humanity.

One of the most innovative areas within the discipline is without a doubt the use of nanotechnology to develop smart materials that help us fight the temperatures caused by global warming.

Around, different talked to Francisco Ramírez, PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Academic at Adolfo Ibáñez University.

For this reason that Ramírez decided to implement this logic on objects like windows It mixes nanometer-sized molecules to create materials that behave differently depending on the amount of photon energy received.

“This manipulation of light at the nanoscale to be able to interact and change its properties is what we call nanophotonics“, explained the mechanical engineer.

How are intelligent windows created?

Ramírez assured that one of the materials that caught his most attention for building nanophotonic windows is vanadium dioxide.

“The change in (the element) occurs in a spectrum we call near infrared, which is radiation we don’t see but perceive as heat. So when you do this phase change (…) when it’s hot, it reflects the sun’s radiation, which is in the form of heat, but lets through visible radiation, which allows us to see.”

“So we have a window that remains transparent all year round, but in winter (…) you keep the heat in your house. And in summer (…) it reflects thermal solar radiation but lets visible solar radiation through, so you don’t notice the change but you perceive less heat in your space,” concluded the scientist from Adolfo Ibáñez University.
