ALBANY – It took a while, but UAlbany football is back on its way to winning.
A week after the Great Danes made a winless eight-game start to the season – and an 11-game overall losing skid – the UAlbany on Saturday cut its home schedule to a 41-14 non-conference en route to 34 firsts. – Finished with half mark. Tom and Mary win over Morgan State at Casey Stadium.
“It was good to come out and play early,” said Ulbani head coach Greg Gattuso. “We really dominated in the first half, we played really well and took advantage of mistakes. We managed to get a really good win with two wins in a row.”
Karl Mofor ran back a week after setting a school record with 45 rushing attempts for a career-best 222 yards, ran for three short touchdowns on his senior day and finished with 90 yards on 24 carries.
Meanwhile, the UAlbany passing game flourished, with Jeff Underkuffler throwing for 328 yards and a pair of touchdowns, completing 17 of 31 passes. Roy Alexander and Ian Renninger each caught touchdowns, and tight end Thomas Grenney caught three passes for 113 yards, including a 73-yarder in the second quarter that set up a 1-yard Kellin Parker touchdown run.
UAlbany (2-8 on aggregate) struck five sacks on defense, with Jared Versse collecting a pair to give him 9 1/2 in the season.
The Great Danes exploded to 20 points in the second quarter and opened a 34-0 halftime lead before the start of the second half was delayed by more than an hour due to thunder and lightning in the field.
UAlbany will conclude its season with rival Stony Brook next Saturday.
