UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson looks to play Utah

Dorian Thompson-Robinson has mastered a different kind of progressions this week.

Having missed one pass on Monday during part of practice open to the media, the UCLA quarterback attempted one pass on Tuesday while still recovering from an apparent injury to the shooting arm.

On Wednesday, Thompson-Robinson was a full-fledged participant in the first training sessions. He continued to wear a white armband on his right arm, but did not appear limited in throwing. He hit hosts Logan Loya and Chase Cat from 20 yards across the field before picking up speed and passing 30 yards.

Reporters are only allowed to watch the first 20 minutes of the workout.

As expected, UCLA coach Chip Kelly did not clarify ahead of Wednesday’s training on the status of Thompson-Robinson and the Bruins preparing to face Utah Saturday night at Rice Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake. City.

Reporter: “There is [Thompson-Robinson] can I throw passes? “

Kelly: “He’s available.”

Reporter: “How is he progressing in his recovery?”

Kelly: “He’s doing great.”

Reporter: “Do you expect him to throw a pass today?”

Kelly: “He’s available.”

Thompson-Robinson was injured in the last UCLA transfer during a 34-31 defeat to Oregon last weekend. He was replaced by red-shirt freshman Ethan Garbers, who will start against Utah if Thompson-Robinson can’t play.

The UCLA reserve quarterback hasn’t won his first start since Richard Breo helped the Bruins defeat Washington State on October 2, 2010.

Kelly said he wouldn’t have had to change his game plan if Garbers were the starting quarterback.

“Ethan can control our entire attack, and we understand everything Ethan can do, and Ethan and Dorian are very similar,” Kelly said.

Kelly said Garbers ‘running ability matched that of Thompson-Robinson, one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks on the West Coast, noting that Garbers’ older brother, Chase, was an all-time leader among defenders in California.

“Garbers are good athletes,” said Kelly, “so don’t underestimate them.”

Kelly then jokingly added, “Sleep on it; he is not a very good master. “
