A recent report titled “The Future is Local” calls on local and regional leaders in the UK to take the lead in achieving the Net Zero goal. Written by Conservative MP and “Net Zero czar” Chris Skidmore, the report follows Mission Zero, an independent review commissioned by the UK Government to assess the implementation of Net Zero.
The report presents 31 recommendations organized into five key themes and their respective proposals. One of the proposals is the introduction of a Net Zero Local Charter, which aims to improve collaboration and clarify responsibilities between the UK Government, devolved governments and regional, municipal and local authorities. In addition, the report advocates for the rapid, consistent and successful implementation of Local Area Energy Plans throughout the country.
To facilitate collaboration between the UK Government and local/regional authorities, the report proposes the development of a Net Zero Local Implementation Framework, using the Net Zero Local Forum. Skidmore highlighted that the important role of local and regional government is often overlooked in discussions about the UK’s Net Zero commitments. Many councils and regions are leading climate action and trying to reach Net Zero ahead of national targets.
The report, produced by the Local Mission Zero Network, presents various recommendations aimed at promoting local implementation of Net Zero. It emphasized that if the central government cannot provide enough support, it should make way and allow local and regional leaders to pursue their positive vision to achieve Net Zero. in partnership with communities across the country. By empowering local and regional authorities, the economic development and regional development opportunities associated with Net Zero can be effectively leveraged.
In conclusion, the report urges local and regional leaders in the UK to press ahead with their ambitious plans for Net Zero. Working with various stakeholders and communities, these leaders can drive meaningful action and make significant progress toward the nation’s Net Zero goals.
