Ukraine did drone attack, America warned Russia

Kyiv ( Associated Press) — An overnight drone strike near the Ukrainian port of Odessa caused a massive fire and explosion, the military said Monday, hours after the United States vowed decisive action and “catastrophic consequences” if Russia Uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

The strategic southern city has come under several drone attacks in recent days. The last one targeted a military installation, where it detonated ammunition. According to Ukraine’s Southern Military Command, firefighters were having trouble getting the blaze under control.

Meanwhile, fears were growing that Russia might try to escalate the conflict after what Ukraine and the West saw as illegal referendums in parts of Ukraine that it controlled.

The vote, which ended on Tuesday, was followed by the flight of thousands of residents and images of Russian troops going door to door to try to pressure Ukrainians to vote. Russia was expected to declare the results in its favor, a move that could prompt Moscow to add territory under the guise of defending itself under the Russian nuclear umbrella.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan made it clear that Russia would pay a heavy price if it followed through with veiled threats to use nuclear weapons in the conflict.

“If Russia crosses this line, there will be disastrous consequences for Russia. America will respond decisively,” he told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday.

Washington’s message has been further elaborated on in private conversations with their Russian counterparts, he said, without elaborating.

“So the Russians understand where we are. We understand where we are. We are prepared for any contingency,” he said in other statements on This Week on ABC television. And we will do whatever it takes to discourage Russia from taking that step.

Separately, a Russian rocket attack targeted a town in southeastern Ukraine and the center of the Zaporizhia region, according to regional military official Oleksandr Starukh.

The official shared photos of damaged buildings and said the attack also caused fires and damaged unspecified infrastructure.

For its part, the British military said on Monday that the first batch of Russian troops mobilized by Moscow had started arriving at military bases.

In a report posted online, Britain’s Ministry of Defense said “several tens” had been called. However, Russia still had challenges to resolve.

“Unlike most Western armies, the Russian military provides low-level initial training to soldiers in their designated operational units, rather than at specialized training facilities,” the ministry said.

Under normal circumstances two battalions are deployed while the third remains behind for training. But that third battalion is also deployed to the war in Ukraine, which according to British reports undermines its training.
