Ukraine, armed with US HIMARS missiles, retaliates in force to Russian aggression in recent attack on Russian military base,
HIMARS: powerful weapon in Ukrainian hands
The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) has been a key element in Ukraine’s combat operations since it received its first shipment of long-range missiles last summer.
Developed by Lockheed Martin, HIMARS is a five-tonne truck-mounted rocket launcher capable of carrying six rockets that can hit targets up to 80 km away. These rockets are guided by GPS and can be fired at a speed of 94 kmph.
The US military has found a versatile asset in Himars And the ability to transport C-130s, seaplanes, and other large aerial vehicles has been an asset to Ukrainian forces.
Ukraine’s counterattack
Recently, the Ukrainian military launched a HIMARS attack on a Russian base, destroying a Russian officer’s post. The attack comes after a series of brutal Russian attacks that killed at least 26 Ukrainians, including children.
HIMARS allowed Ukrainian troops to surprise the Russian enemy and eliminate many Russian artillery emplacements, thus limiting their counterattack capabilities. However, the United States has imposed sanctions on Ukraine’s use of long-range ATACMS missiles, which can reach Russian territory.
US military support for Ukraine
in April, The United States unveiled a $2.6 billion military aid package aimed at supporting Kiev in its defensive efforts against Russia., The assistance includes artillery, small arms and ammunition for the HIMARS rocket system.
These additional shipments of HIMARS have undoubtedly strengthened Ukraine’s defensive capabilities in its fight against the Russian occupation.
Ukraine uses US-provided Himars missiles in an attack on a Russian base, demonstrating its determination to fight Russian aggression and boosting its defensive capabilities thanks to US military support.
