UN: a sharp jump in the number of people suffering from hunger

The UN food agency said on Monday that the number of people on the verge of hunger in 43 countries rose to 45 million as hunger spikes across the world.

According to the World Food Program (WFP), the jump from 42 million people at the beginning of the year was largely driven by a food security estimate that an additional 3 million people in Afghanistan are facing hunger.

“Tens of millions of people are looking into the abyss. Conflict, climate change and COVID-19 are driving an increase in the number of severely hungry, ”said WFP Executive Director David Beasley.

“And the latest figures show that more than 45 million people are now on the brink of starvation,” he said after a trip to Afghanistan, where WFP is increasing support to nearly 23 million people.

“Fuel costs are rising, food prices are rising, fertilizers are becoming more expensive, all contributing to new crises like the one now unfolding in Afghanistan, as well as long-standing emergencies like Yemen and Syria,” he added.

WFP said the cost of preventing hunger worldwide is currently $ 7 billion, up from $ 6.6 billion at the start of the year, but warned that traditional funding streams have been overextended.

Families facing acute food insecurity are “forced to make destructive choices”: marry off their children early, pick them up from school, or feed them locusts, wild leaves or cacti.

“Meanwhile, media reports from Afghanistan indicate that families are reportedly forced to sell their children in a desperate attempt to survive,” the report said.

Multiple droughts in Afghanistan, coupled with the economic crisis, have pushed families to the extreme, while about 12.4 million people in Syria do not know where their next meal is – more than ever during the decade of conflict, the report said.

Severe hunger is also on the rise in Ethiopia, Haiti, Somalia, Angola, Kenya and Burundi, according to the Roman agency.
