Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also wants to attend the UN General Assembly in New York. But the US has not yet issued a visa. Delay strategy not used the first time.

New York. The United States is apparently delaying the issuance of visas for a Russian delegation led by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, ahead of the upcoming general debate at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“We are actively working with the US Mission on visas for delegations to upcoming UN Headquarters meetings and liaising with the Mission on specific matters brought to our attention. We do that in this case,” said a UN spokeswoman upon request. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is in close contact with relevant agencies including the host country, the United States and Russia.

An agreement between the United States as the host country and the United Nations governs, among other things, the legal framework for the issuance of visas. Accordingly, the United States is obliged to allow diplomats and members of government delegations to enter the United States if they wish to visit the United Nations Headquarters on the East River in Manhattan. However, their freedom of movement may be limited to a few blocks around the United Nations building.

In the past, there have always been temporary delays in the issuance of visas by the US, for example, most recently in Iran. Several heads of government from rival states, such as Cuban ruler Fidel Castro, spoke at the United Nations. This year’s general debate at the UN General Assembly will begin on September 20 and will last for a week. More than 150 heads of state and government have announced their presence.
