UN Secretary General Expresses Support for Olympic Athletes

In a video message released ahead of Friday’s opening of the 2020 Olympics, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “he is proud to extend his respect to the world’s Olympic athletes.”

Guterres also expressed his gratitude to the citizens of Japan who hosted the 2020 Olympics.

“The Olympic spirit brings out the best in humanity: cooperation and solidarity, talent, tolerance. All of this inspires and unites us in these difficult times. We all mourn for those who died due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Guterres said.

He added that every athlete in Tokyo has overcome enormous obstacles and shown great determination.

“If we bring the same energy to meet our global challenges, we can achieve anything: peace, a clean and green planet, development, a better and more equal world to support the most vulnerable, and leave no one behind,” he said. .
