Union Berlin completes Europe’s false start

1. FC Union Berlin also loses second game in Europa League: Bundesliga soccer club missed two good chances at the start – and conceded a late lucky punch against Sporting Braga.

At the top of the Bundesliga, Europe risks an early end: 1. FC Union Berlin have finally messed up the start of their premier season in the Europa League. A week after a 0–1 loss against Belgian First Division club Union Saint-Gilois, coach Urs Fischer’s team also lost the second group game 0–1 (0–0) at Sporting Braga.

Vitinho (77th minute) scored the decisive goal for the Portuguese in front of 17,782 spectators, after an unfortunate defensive action by Berlin goalkeeper Frederic Rono. The leaders of the Bundesliga remain in Group D without points, while Braga got the optimum result with six points in the first two matches.

The Berliners got off to a good start in front of the nearly 3,000 fans who traveled with them. Supporters practically sang through the Estadio Municipal with their impressive rock faces, and the team gave their all on the pitch. Sheraldo Baker nearly took the early lead after less than 15 minutes, but the Portuguese goalkeeper saved his lob to save it from a corner. The next header from Diogo Leite, who played for Braga last season, went to the outside post. Union was the more active team, but the final idea was often missing. And who came next, Braga usually deftly defended. Second in the Portuguese league, the home season started off strong with five wins and one draw. What is the difference between Sporting: a closed defense and a sharp counterattack.

The hosts took the lead just before the break. Rono was in dire need of leg defense against Banja. The union lacked ideas and precision. Things started off well after the change of sides. But Julian Ryerson also did not hit the target accurately, his shot just missed the goal. In this way a game developed, the level of play of which became more and more low. There were fouls and yellow cards, but there was less and less action worth watching.

The longer the game lasted, the more the Union focused on the defensive. And it didn’t go well. Braga pushed more and more for the equalizer – and was rewarded. Rono blocks a long-range shot to the side, but right past Vitinho’s feet. He scored the winning goal for the Portuguese.
