“We Caused the Recession”

Liz Truss, by far the foreign minister, said she wanted to cut taxes: “Everybody understands that Covid-19 is a once-in-a-century event and by trying to revive our economy, we’re going to damage it.” We are causing the end of the recession, and we are putting people out of work at the expense of hard-working taxpayers who are seeing their taxes go contrary to what we promised in our manifesto. As for Rishi Sunak, there is “nothing conservative” in Liz Truss’s approach and that her economic policy would raise interest rates of 7%.

Found strategies

For his part, Truss responded that the former finance minister’s strategy could propel the country into recession. He wants to develop a plan for immediate economic growth, and a temporary moratorium on the tax on green energy.

Rishi Sunak’s strategy is the opposite: he wants to raise taxes and keep reserves to deal with inflation.

Members of the Conservative Party will elect their leader on 5 September, but a new debate is scheduled for next week.
