United, Newcastle reach League Cup semi-finals

Manchester United and Newcastle reached the League Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, another positive step in an encouraging season for both teams that have established themselves in the top four places in the Premier League.

United made it eight straight wins in all competitions to reach the League Cup semi-finals for the third time in four campaigns as they beat third-tier Charlton Athletic 3–0 thanks to a strike from Brazil’s Antony and two from Marcus Rashford.

After Newcastle beat Leicester 2–0 to progress to the last four of the competition for the first time since 1976, the Saudi-controlled side were eyeing a trophy and quickly becoming a formidable force in English football. Dan Byrne and Brazilian Joelinton scored in the second half.

The other two quarterfinal matches will be held on Wednesday. Manchester City host Southampton and Nottingham Forest host Wolverhampton in another matchup of Premier League teams.

Newcastle and Manchester United are level on points and are third and fourth respectively in the league. They have been in excellent form having lost to each other since September.

Facing the bottom-placed team left alive, Man United manager Erik ten Haag fielded a depleted team against Charlton ahead of Saturday’s derby against City and managed to progress.

Antony received the ball down the right and fired from outside the box to give the home side the lead after 21 minutes.

Rashford came on as a substitute in the 60th minute and scored for the sixth game in a row on a counter-attack in the 90th minute, four minutes later he fired in with his left foot to avoid the offside trap.

At St James’ Park, Byrne was the unusual scorer to open the scoring for Newcastle in the 60th with an assist from Joelinton.

Joelinton, who had hit the post shortly before, hit a low shot in the 73rd.

Newcastle have not won a trophy since 1955.
