From this September 1 and for the next five years, Luis Antonio Franco Vergara, a graduate of Biomedical Engineering-UAQ from the Faculty of Engineering, will be part of the newly created “Translational Neurophysiology and Brain Stimulation (TNBS)” laboratory. University of Toronto, Canada at Toronto Western Hospital, where he will pursue his doctoral studies in biomedical engineering focused on the fields of nervous/sensory systems and rehabilitation.

TNBS was opened in 2020 and focuses on aggressively receiving nerve signals and deep brain stimulation, which is used to treat various neurological disorders, primarily Parkinson’s. So it would be in this place, that he would study and live with scientists and students from Canada, Germany and Australia, being the only Mexican in said laboratory.

His work, according to -2016-2021 generation engineering faculty student- Antonio Franco remarked that his research will focus on the search for biomarkers for brain stimulation; In particular, biosignal processing focuses on closed-loop deep brain stimulation.

Regarding his career, he reported that during his university career he worked on a thesis project relating to the classification of biosignals in electroencephalograms for the detection of alcoholism, as there is currently no objective tool for its diagnosis, only questionnaires and these can be susceptible to deception. , In addition, in 2021, he undertook a summer stay in the United States to study health in space with a multidisciplinary team at the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science.
