The Uttar Pradesh Police has lost one of its most loyal workers. After serving the department for over 10 years, constable ‘Oli’, a dog specializing in explosive detection, died here on Saturday.
A condolence parade was organized for Oli. The dog’s carcass was placed in front of the martyr’s memorial in the police line and men in khakis bid a tearful farewell to their colleague.
Born on March 10, 2011, Oli was trained to sniff explosives under the supervision of handler Tulsi Sonkar at the National Dog Training Center in Tekanpur, Gwalior, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shivraj.
After completing a training period of six months, Oli was admitted to the rank of constable in the local police line on 17 June 2012.
Over the last 10 years, Oli was instrumental in apprehending criminals and locating hidden explosives on several occasions.
In April 2014, Oli helped the police locate a huge cache of ammunition hidden in the artillery area under Kotwali Nagar. In October 2015, a pile of gunpowder buried under bricks and stones was discovered by Oli amid rumors of a cylinder burst in Kharguppur town.
In May 2016, Oli found a bomb in a garbage dump near the railway station under Kotwali Nagar police station in Bahraich district.
In December 2019, the dog traced the grenades hidden in the bush in the Katra Bazar police station area. The ASP said that in November 2021, Oli found gunpowder buried in a house near Tikri town under Wazirganj police station area.
Oli died in the line of duty on Saturday evening.
The officer said the dog was a member of the police family. The department was spending Rs 18,000 per month on his food and Rs 3,000 for his treatment.
