Up to 20 percent increase in respiratory diseases

Juarez City.- Respiratory diseases and their complications increase by 20 percent at this time, said Erendira Medina Pérez, head of medical programs for the first level of care of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), which she attributed to the significant temperature change. Avoid smoking, wear a hat, gloves and scarf, cover your nose and mouth, and eat fruits and vegetables.

He indicated that it is important to wash hands frequently, sneeze into the angle of the arm and use face masks in closed spaces to prevent the spread of viruses and infections, as well as ensuring vaccination against influenza and pneumococcus. The IMSS expert said that the most common diseases in this season are rhinopharyngitis, laryngitis and bronchiolitis, especially among children, who transmit them, that is, spread them.

Similarly, he stressed that pneumonia, acute bronchitis, bronchial asthma, influenza in adults and currently COVID-19 are common; For this reason he stressed the importance of extreme care in these groups. He added that it is also important that pregnant women, people with diabetes or high blood pressure, those with HIV, obesity and those who are overweight take extreme precautions.

“It is very important that they get vaccinated because it reduces the risk of complications by 50 percent and the risk of mortality from respiratory disease by 60 percent,” he said. In turn, he stressed that people who are immunocompromised are very vulnerable people and more prone to contract respiratory disease in addition to developing some complication.

Medina Perez stressed that the IMSS has the infrastructure and specialized personnel to take care of the beneficiaries who need it and advise on preventive measures to pharmacological management to avoid complications. All this through its Family Medicine Units (UMF), and recommended that the population not self-medicate and indicated that they should go to the doctor at the slightest symptom.
