UPDATE: Parents of Schoolchildren Suspected of Ethan Crumbley’s Shooting Detained

James and Jennifer Crumbley were found and detained after their car was identified in Detroit early Saturday morning, according to the Detroit Free Press. “Yes, they are both in custody and will soon be on their way to the Oakland County Jail,” said Mike McCabe, Oakland County Deputy Sheriff.

The search was launched Friday after the parents of Michigan school shooting suspect Ethan Crumbley failed to show up on charges of manslaughter.

James and Jennifer Crumbley disappeared after Oakland Michigan County Attorney Karen McDonald announced Friday that they would each be charged with four counts of manslaughter on four students, their 15-year-old son was allegedly shot and killed on Tuesday. Seven more people were injured in the shooting at Oxford High School in Oxford Township.

On Wednesday, the teenager, as an adult, was charged with murder, attempted murder and terrorism resulting in death.

MacDonald said at a press conference that the teen’s parents ignored the serious warning signs about their son and were unable to obtain firearms in their home.

Hours before the shooting, the teacher discovered an extremely disturbing drawing by Ethan Crumbley, which depicts a wounded man and a pistol, MacDonald said. His parents were summoned to school and told to take the child to counseling. Instead, they sent him back to class, she added.

The Oakland County Fugitive Detention Team began searches on Friday after charges were announced against the Crumbley elders, and the couple’s lawyer reportedly told Oakland County Sheriff Junior Mike McCabe that she was unable to reach her clients.

“Our last conversation with a lawyer was that she tried to contact them by phone and text messages, but they did not respond,” McCabe said in an interview with Detroit News.

Crumbley’s indictment was set for Friday, but they were still out by the end of the day, CNN reports.

During a hearing that began at noon in front of Judge Julie Nicholson, a lieutenant from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the couple was not in government custody, according to the Detroit Free Press.

A law enforcement spokesman told CNN that the parents withdrew $ 4,000 from an ATM in Rochester Hills, Michigan on Friday. Rochester is approximately 19 kilometers from Oxford.

McCabe cited Ethan Crumbley’s “fugitive parents” in a statement Friday afternoon and said the FBI and the US Marshals Service were involved in their search. The sheriff’s office also issued a “Watch Out” message with pictures of the couple and their car.

Two attorneys, who said they represent Crumblay, insisted that their clients leave town for their safety and return to face charges.

“On Thursday evening, we contacted the Oakland County attorney to discuss the matter and inform her that James and Jennifer Crumbley will be brought to trial,” attorneys Shannon Smith and Marielle Lehman said in a statement. “They are not running from law enforcement, despite recent comments in media reports.”

But after the couple did not show up, McCabe said that “Crumble’s action of fleeing and ignoring his lawyer certainly adds weight to the allegations. They cannot escape from their side in this tragedy, ”he added.
