The United States and Taiwan announced on Wednesday the start of negotiations to end bilateral trade and the agreement collapsed. China continues to conduct military exercises around Taiwan, with five meetings to visit the island. Even the Taipei Army has started its military training.
“We strongly condemn the Chinese Communist Party’s continuous military provocations around the sea and air of Taiwan undermining the peace zone. We must say that the intensity of combat readiness training is up to each government, so the military operations of the Communist China only provide us with an opportunity to train our combat readiness,” Sun Li-fang, spokesman for Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense.
The Taiwanese presidency has described the Chinese military presence in the Taiwan Strait as an “investment” and called Beijing’s government’s stance “irresponsible”. To which China answered:
“Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan under the connivance and consent of the United States is a retrograde practice that seriously violates China’s sovereignty, seriously infringes on China’s internal affairs, and seriously undermines peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. China must give a firm response. Our position is legitimate, reasonable and legal . Our actions are consistent, strong and proportionate,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin.
Business issues will include facilitating trade, promoting good regulatory practices, strengthening anti-corruption standards, improving trade between small and medium-sized companies, deepening agricultural trade and removing discriminatory trade barriers.
Digital commerce, labor and environmental standards, and possible ways to distort market practices in public companies and practices and policies that do not respond to markets will also be discussed, with a veiled mention of China.
