US Attorney’s Office and FBI warn the public against issuing false threats against schools and universities

Federal Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico And this federal investigation negotiation (FBI) warned the public on Wednesday about the dire consequences of issuing false threatsFollowing recent alerts of shootings against schools in Puerto Rico.

“Making a threat against the safety of a person or organization via social media, by text message or by email is a federal crime for creating a threat through interstate communications,” said the United States Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico. , William Stephen Muldrow,

The prosecutor highlighted in a statement that “those who publish or send such threats may be sentenced to up to five years in federal prison or may face charges before the courts in Puerto Rico.” “

Muldrow said that “one careless and imprecise comment on social media could result in young people beginning their adult lives in prison and ultimately being labeled criminals for the rest of their days.”

“To avoid such dire consequences, it is necessary to educate them,” he added.

Meanwhile, FBI San Juan Special Agent Joseph Gonzalez said his agency will follow up on every lead and follow up on each of these threatening incidents.

“When it comes to threats to schools and other public places, our stance is to treat any threat as if it were credible to ensure the safety of the public,” he explained.

He also warned those making these threats that even if there was no intent to commit a crime, “a threat of this nature is not a prank but a federal crime.”

Authorities evacuated two schools in San Juan last Monday after students threatened to shoot up those facilities via WhatsApp messages.

They also evacuated the Mayagüez University campus on Tuesday due to an explosive device threat, which was eventually cleared, and a school in Ponce due to a false alarm.

Unlike in the United States, threats against schools and universities are not common in Puerto Rico, let alone attacks or mass shootings on these campuses.
