US brand Fisker revives battery exchange for electric

For years, at least in Europe, there has been no talk of a battery exchange system which, at the dawn of electric mobility, was presented as a plausible remedy for the then poor autonomy of the models for sale and the lack of Went. recharging points, the latter still pressing in countries like ours. French brand Renault was the one that put the most faith in this technology, but the failure of the Better Place initiative, launched in 2012, practically smothered the issue in this part of the world.

Californian Tesla also began a similar experiment, although it was soon found that its customers were completely unaware of it as they had an extensive network of superchargers – in fact the most deployed by any automobile manufacturer. Nice – and it was free for them too. Time. Moment.

What hasn’t worked in the West has had better luck in China, where many brands have added the system to their list of services. For example, NIO has exported it to Europe and the United States with good results, so much so that it has encouraged other firms, such as North American Fisker, to adopt it with the beginning of marketing their Ocean model. Can those two markets.

Battery swapping is an interesting formula for reducing the cost of owning an electric car in an asset. Let’s remember that the battery is the most expensive component of an electric vehicle – it represents at least 30% of its total price – with which customers can save a good amount of money by being able to change their energy storage system, especially in stations. ceases to pay. Designed for that purpose.

Fisker has announced that users of the new Ocean, an electric car that has generated much anticipation and whose extreme version offers no less than 707 kilometers of approved autonomy, will be able to use the battery exchange system in the first quarter of 2024.

For now, the option will only be available in the United States, where it has signed a collaboration deal with local provider Ample. It is known for the sophisticated facilities it has dedicated to replace high voltage batteries from other brands of electric vehicles.

Ample was introduced in Europe a while ago with a service that used modular batteries adapted to different electric models. To be able to use this, manufacturers did not need to modify the design of their cars, but merely split their large batteries into separate modules; In this way, the US firm could theoretically add or remove modular batteries depending on the available space and size.

A quick operation

Fisker states on its website that the battery replacement process will take no more than 10 minutes, slightly more than the time it currently takes to fill up the fuel tank and pay at a service station. What hasn’t been confirmed is whether the service will be open to all versions of Ocean and whether it entails a reduction in car price, similar to the one NIO offers to its customers who have chosen the battery rental system.

The American brand also indicates that the interchangeable battery solution is particularly suitable for uses in which great autonomy is important but there is not much time available for recharge, as in the shared transport sector. He also says that electric vehicle batteries wear out over time and replacing them requires an outlay that is difficult to estimate, a problem that is avoided by opting for a battery exchange.

In short, Fisker is aimed at “fleet operators who intend to transition to electric mobility without financial or operational commitments.” In his opinion, Ample’s technology will make it possible to “quickly roll out the infrastructure so that their vehicles are available in the largest markets in the shortest possible time.”

The brand’s CEO, Henrik Fisker, has finally indicated that “Ampel’s innovative battery exchange system will bring a new level of affordability to the Fisker Ocean and potentially other models” that they intend to launch on the market soon.
