US Commercial Gaming Revenue Hits Record In Q1 2023

The US commercial gaming industry generated record revenue of $16.6 billion in the first quarter of 2023, breaking records for the eighth consecutive quarter.

According to the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker, US commercial gaming revenue hit a quarterly record of $16.6bn in Q1 2023, marking the eighth consecutive quarter the industry has set new records. AGA President and CEO Bill Miller said: “After two years of sustained growth following the implementation of measures due to Covid-19, the US gaming industry has never been stronger. Commercial Gambling Revenue Tracking Highlights

Nationwide, 18 of the 35 commercial gaming markets set new revenue records for the quarter, with only Mississippi surpassing its Q1 2022 quarterly revenue.

All commercial gaming verticals posted quarterly revenue records in Q1 2023. Retail gaming accounted for 75.3 percent of total revenue, while online gaming reached its highest share of 24.7 percent. , Detail analysis of each sector:

  • Traditional gaming: Traditional land-based casino gaming generated quarterly revenue of $12.3bn in Q3 2022, surpassing the previous record of $12.26bn.
  • Legal sports betting: Nationwide, Americans spent a record $31.11bn on sports in Q1 2023, generating an all-time high of $2.79bn in quarterly revenue (+70.1 percent YoY). Growth compared to Q1 2022 was largely driven by the launch of new markets in Kansas, Massachusetts and Ohio, as well as the launch of mobile betting in Maryland.
  • iGaming: iGaming raised $1.48bn in Q1 2023, representing 22.7 per cent year-on-year revenue growth.

The AGA today released its annual State of the States report, which provides the definitive economic and regulatory analysis of commercial gambling in the United States in 2022 on a state-by-state basis for policy makers, gambling stakeholders and industry observers.

State of the States 2023 shows that commercial gaming set a record $13.48 billion in direct gaming tax revenue paid to state and local governments in 2022, representing a 15.3 percent increase over 2021. This doesn’t include the extra billion paid out in earnings. , sales or other taxes.

The AGA’s Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker provides a state-by-state, cumulative view of the financial performance of the US commercial gaming industry based on state revenue reports. This report highlights the results for the first quarter of 2023.

As of the first quarter of 2023, commercial gaming marketplaces including casino gaming, sports betting and iGaming were operational in 34 states and the District of Columbia.
