US Customs and Border Protection chief resigns

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) – The head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has resigned as head of the nation’s largest law enforcement agency after agents were forced to handle a record number of migrants entering the United States from Mexico. facing.

Chris Magnus submitted his resignation to President Joe Biden on Saturday, assuring him that it has been “a privilege and an honor” to be part of the government.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden has accepted Magnus’ resignation.

“President Biden commended the commissioner for her nearly 40 years of service and the contributions she made to police reform during her tenure as police chief in three American cities,” he said.

Two people informed of Magnus’ departure told The Associated Press on Friday that he was asked to resign or fired, less than a year after he took office. The sources requested anonymity as they were not authorized to comment on the matter.

Magnus’ resignation is part of a wider change in national security due to difficulties in preventing entry of migrants from several countries, including Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua. The situation comes ahead of the prospect that Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives in January and are expected to launch an investigation related to the border.

Migrants were stopped 2.38 million times at the Mexico border in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, up 37% from the previous year.

The annual total exceeded two million for the first time in August and is more than double the highest level recorded in 2019 during the presidency of Donald Trump.

The Los Angeles Times newspaper was the first outlet to report on the ultimatum. In a statement to the newspaper, Magnus said that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had asked him to resign or he would be fired.
