US Customs: Marijuana, ammunition recovered in Michigan | Nation World News

DETROIT ( Associated Press) – Marijuana and ammunition seizures at Michigan’s border with Canada have increased over the past year, despite travel restrictions between the US and Canada due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Marijuana seized last year by U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel assigned to the Detroit Field Office was up nearly 2,800% from fiscal 2019, the agency said Thursday.

More than 14,000 pounds (6,350 kilograms) of marijuana, 240 pounds (108.8 kilograms) of cocaine, more than 25 pounds (11 kilograms) of methamphetamine and about three pounds (1.3 kilograms) of fentanyl were seized at various ports of entry in Michigan. As per the enforcement data for the financial year 2021.

A 2,583 lb (1,171 kg) pot was found in July. Tractor trailer packed between pallets during inspection at the Fort Street cargo facility southwest of downtown Detroit.

The Detroit Field Office is responsible for the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit and the Detroit Windsor Tunnel, the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, the International Bridge in Salt Ste. Mary in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The agency also said that the 40,000 rounds of ammunition seized last year were nearly 650 per cent higher than in FY20. More than 180 firearms and $5.6 million in undeclared currency were also seized.

The agency said more than 180 arrests were made for drug and human trafficking, firearms violations, fraud and other violations.

In November the United States began allowing vaccinated people to enter Country by land for non-essential travel, easing restrictions imposed during the coronavirus pandemic.

In August, Canada lifted its ban On Americans crossing the border to shop, vacation or travel.
