US expands closure of land borders with Canada and Mexico

The Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday that the United States has closed the land borders it shares with Canada and Mexico to non-essential travel until Aug. 21.

Canada said on Monday that the DHS has extended the shutdown for 30 days, allowing fully vaccinated visitors from the US to travel for non-essential travel from August 9 to 16, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. month-long travel ban.

As the US and Canada ease travel restrictions, the delta variant spreads to parts of the US where vaccination rates are relatively low, raising concerns among US health officials.

DHS said it is “in constant contact with its Canadian and Mexican counterparts to identify the conditions under which sanctions can be safely and permanently eased.”

Businesses in the US and Canada have lifted limits on non-essential travel between the two countries, imposed in March 2020.

The US has previously allowed Canadians to enter the country by air after receiving a negative COVID-19 test, but Canada has not allowed travelers from the US to do so.

The Biden administration last month created interagency working groups with Canada, Mexico, Britain and the European Union to study how to eventually lift border and travel restrictions.
