US expects response from Beijing even after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan

WASHINGTON (DPA-AFX) – In response to the visit of top US politician Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, the government in Washington is expecting a long-term response from China. “We are hopeful that they will respond in the long run,” John Kirby, communications director for the National Security Council, said in Washington on Tuesday. He could not name an exact period of time, but the US government expects Beijing to respond even after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan – for example with military maneuvers or economic measures. So far, China’s response has been entirely in line with what the US government expected and predicted.

Kirby insisted that the United States does not seek crisis, nor engage in saber-rattling. However, whatever the Chinese government decides, the US government is ready to deal with it. Referring to Pelosi, Kirby said US President Joe Biden respected his decision to visit Taiwan. He reiterated that Pelosi’s visit would not change the United States’ one-China policy.

Despite all the threats from China, Pelosi reached Taiwan on Tuesday. The stay of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives is the highest-ranking trip from the United States to the Democratic Republic of the island in a quarter of a century. Beijing views Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic, vigorously rejects Taipei’s official contacts with other countries and strongly warned the United States against Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

China also strongly opposed Pelosi’s visit immediately after the landing. The foreign ministry in Beijing spoke of a “very dangerous game with fire”. China will “take all necessary measures to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity”. Just before Pelosi landed, Chinese fighter jets took off over the Taiwan Strait sea lane. In addition, China announced maneuvers with target drills in six sea areas around the Democratic Island Republic./jac/DP/he
