US House panel summons social media firms to probe January 6 attack

The US House committee probing the January 6 attack on the Capitol summoned Meta, Alphabet, Twitter and Reddit on Thursday, seeking information on how their social media platforms were used to reverse the 2020 presidential election in a failed attempt. The bid was made to help fuel misinformation.

“Two major questions for the select committee are how the spread of misinformation and violent extremism contributed to the violent attack on our democracy, and what steps – if any – have social media companies taken to radicalize their platforms to violence. Rep. Benny Thompson, chairman of the House Select Committee, said in a statement.

“It’s disappointing that even after months of engagement, we don’t have the necessary documentation and information to answer those basic questions.”

The subpoenas are the latest development in the panel’s investigation into the reasons for the attack on the Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump and the role played by Trump, who has pushed false claims that he lost a rigged election to Joe Biden.

The committee has issued over 50 summons and heard from over 300 witnesses. It is expected to issue an interim report in the summer and a final report in the fall.

Spokesmen for the four social media companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The social media platform was widely blamed for raising calls for violence and spreading misinformation, which contributed to an attempt to violently reverse the election results on January 6.

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey were questioned by lawmakers last March in a hearing over misinformation about their companies’ role in the capital riot.

In a letter sent to Zuckerberg this week, Representative Thompson said that despite “repeated and specific requests for documents” related to Facebook’s practices on election misinformation and violent content, the committee still had not received the material. Was. There were similar criticisms in letters to the other three CEOs.
