US State Department spokesman Ned Price confirmed on Wednesday that the seventh round of Iran nuclear talks will begin on November 29 in Vienna, Austria.
“We will resume for the seventh round on Monday, November 29. Special envoy (for Iran Robert) Malley will again lead the US participation in these negotiations,” Price said.
The talks are between Iran and the deal’s remaining original partners, with the US participating indirectly, with Mali leading the US delegation.
“We are very clear that the talks – if they are to be successful, if we are to close the remaining areas of disagreement, they must start right where the sixth round of talks left off,” Price said.
Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani also tweeted on Wednesday that talks would resume.
“In a phone call with @enriquemora_, we agreed to begin talks aimed at lifting unlawful and inhumane sanctions on November 29 in Vienna,” he wrote.
EU envoy Enrique Mora has helped mediate indirect talks between the US and Iran, along with diplomats from the EU, Russia and China, and other members of the original deal.
The talks aim to restore the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. Former President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the accord in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Iran.
President Joe Biden has said that the US will rejoin Tehran after fully complying with the sanctions of the deal on the development of nuclear weapons.
Restoring the deal would lift sanctions on Iran’s economy.
