US man dies 1 hour after being detained by police, body camera evidence released

Salt Lake City: A man in Salt Lake City, United States (US) allegedly entered a brewery wearing only underwear, stole a beer, then ran through several streets. The police arrested the man, who died an hour later.

Last Friday, Salt Lake City police released body camera footage of the arrest of a man named Nikon Brandon, which took place on Aug.

A day later, activists questioned why an unarmed man died in police custody. He accused the police of using excessive force which led to the death.

“Stealing a beer doesn’t necessarily mean the death penalty,” says Lex Scott, founder of the Black Lives Matter-Utah movement.

“I don’t care if that guy robs 10 banks in a day. He doesn’t deserve to die. He only deserves justice,” he quoted from Page. india todaySunday, August 28, 2022.

The death of 35-year-old Brandon comes at a time when the United States is still facing the problem of police killings of unarmed persons. Many of these cases involve US citizens with mental problems.

Human rights activists in America are calling for reform. He suggested that persons with mental disorders should be handled by a special team and not by the police.

Brandon’s Facebook account states that he studied at the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque and worked for a home goods company.

Many who commented on Brandon’s Facebook expressed grief and sorrow over the events in Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City Police spokesman Brent Weisberg said events at the scene were very fast and chaotic, as can be seen in live police body camera footage.

“The situation is chaotic, and our officers have had to make decisions very quickly to get the situation under control,” Weisberg said.

He said police began providing medical aid to Brandon at 3:27 p.m. A minute later, police administered several doses of Narcan and performed chest compressions, although Brandon was ultimately helpless.

Weisberg said police did not release a video of Brandon’s medical assistance out of condolences to the family.
