We are in a group of players on an overnight +1, six shots behind, including major winners Justin Thomas, Justin Rose, Patrick Reed and Dustin Johnson. As in any normal tournament, that would seem worthy of challenging the lead on a moving day, but this US Open is so tight, conditions so tough today at Brookline, and they have a huge pack of over 30 players ahead of them. . ,

Still, you’d expect any one of these four to have a real crack at climbing the leaderboards today, and they’ll hope the wind turns more harsh for the leaders later.

Joel Dahman has some story. Dehmann, Buckley, Beau Hoesler, Nesmith, Rodgers and Hardy made it this week by earning spots through 36 holes of qualifying starts with nearly 9,000 entrants, reaching 870, then 65 another 91 Ends up with joining those who had earned a discount in the direct field.

Bryson DeChambeau (+2) is away from his third round and is tied in the first round. Further England’s Richard Bland is equal to two overs from the first three holes.

Matt Fitzpatrick revels in his new-found status as one of golf’s big hitters as he played his way into contention for the second major in succession.

A month after finishing fifth at the US PGA Championship, after battling in the second round of 70, Fitzpatrick equalized Fitzpatrick two-under at the 122nd US Open in Brookline, the scene of his US Amateur victory in 2013.

And this was partially achieved thanks to his increased length from the tee, averaging 317.7 yards in the 27-year-old’s driving distance from Sheffield, two yards ahead of fellow play and two-time major winner Dustin Johnson.

Cream rose to the top on day two of the US Open as a quartet of major champions, including Rory McIlroy, helped set up a mouth-watering weekend at Brookline.

Open champion Colin Morikawa took a brilliant 66 to level five-under par with fellow American Joel Dahman, leaving defending US Open champion Jon Rahm and four-time major winner McIlroy one shot behind.

Rory McIlroy was in a gleeful mood as he entered the third round of the US Open for a fifth major title and first since 2014.

McIlroy recovered from a double bogey on the third hole in round two and fired a shot from the lead shared by Open champions Colin Morikawa and Joel Dehmann, halfway through the four-under par for a card of 69.

“I think I have to go out this week with the mindset that I’m going to try to win my first (major) again,” McIlroy said.

“I’m playing as good golf as I’ve played in a long time. I have a lot of experience. I’m in a good place. I’m really happy with where my game is and I think that’s the most important thing.”

The best score to date is America’s Denny McCarthy from -2 to six holes, which has given him a +1 overall. Most other early starts today are +1 through the first few holes, including Max Homa, Adam Scott and Patrick Kentley, and Spieth now joins them after finding the first greenside bunker.

Max Homa and Adam Scott are off and running for the third day, and next on the first tee is Jordan Spieth (+2). He leaks a three-wood straight into a light rough. He is playing alongside 36-year-old Dutchman Will Besseling, who pulls his drive to the left.

McGinley also cast doubt on Colin Morikawa to maintain his lead. Morikawa (-4) will be out last on the field later today but McGinley thinks the Open champion’s iron play – his biggest weapon – just isn’t enough.
