US Soccer investigates 1991 Berhalter incident

NEW YORK ( Associated Press) – The United States Soccer Federation revealed Tuesday that it is investigating head coach Greg Berhalter for an altercation that occurred in 1991, when he kicked the woman who would later become his wife.

The federation indicated that they became aware of the controversy on 11 December and hired the law firm Alston & Bird to investigate. The federation said Berhalter and wife Rosalind “spoke openly” about the matter and Berhalter acknowledged in a statement Tuesday that he kicked her.

“During this process, US Soccer was made aware of potentially inappropriate behavior directed at several team members by individuals outside the organization,” the USSF said, adding those allegations are being investigated.

The federation indicated it would announce “in the next few days” who would coach the team for exhibition matches against Serbia on 25 January and Colombia three days later. These are the first meetings for the Americans since their World Cup exit in the Round of 16 last month.

In the statement Berhalter said that: “A man contacted US Soccer during the World Cup, saying he had information that would ‘take me down’ – in an apparent attempt to get at something personal that was very personal.” Time had first come to end my association with America’s football”.

“In the fall of 1991, I met my soul mate,” Berhalter said. “We had been dating for four months when an event happened that changed the future of the relationship. One night we were drinking at a local bar, Rosalind and I got into an argument and it went on. It got physical and I kicked his legs.

“Although the officers were not involved in the matter, I voluntarily sought therapy in order to learn, grow, and improve—one of the most valuable decisions I have ever made. To date, this behavior has not been repeated,” he said. Said.

Berhalter, 51, was appointed in December 2018 after the United States failed to qualify for that year’s World Cup. He led the team to 37 wins, 11 losses and 12 draws, and the United States were left with the last direct ticket to the World Cup in this region.
