America is one of the four best teams of the Clausura 2023. Águilas got rid of Atlético de San Luis, in a series that seemed to go off without a hitch, but which turned out to be more prickly than budgeted.
After securing a comfortable 3–1 first leg, the US only needed to seal their classification papers in Azteca. However, the San Luis team gave them a good scare.
In fact, San Luis won the game in Santa Ursula and only a 4–3 aggregate score allowed the US to escape the experience.
Why did San Luis vs America lose?
To the most direct answer, the question is simple: San Luis was better than America. When it comes to explaining, we can add two other distinguishing factors:
- America’s defense sucks
- San Luis goalkeeper Andres Sanchez
The cream-blue defense was really disappointing against St. Louis. The heads of San Luis, Jhon Murillo and Vitinho burned the legs of the experienced wingers of America, Luis Fuentes and Miguel León. Really. It was like two novices trying to keep up with Checo Pérez and Max Verstappen on the F1 circuit.
The centers were also not ready for the task. Seba Cáceres was short, while Néstor Araujo, who replaced the suspended Israel Reyes, was noted for his time on the bench.
The combination of shortcomings, by the way, was taken advantage of by a San Luis who scored two own goals after apparent American failures. First in a corner kick where nobody marked Unai Bilbao and then in a poor decision by Miguel Leún that Leo Bonatini didn’t let go.

San Luis was excited to see the series transform. He gave a big surprise by scoring another goal. However, in the second half, America tightened the screws and polished off the little sign that makes it one of the favorites for the title.
It was still difficult for them to secure a ticket, as they found a phenomenal Andrés Sánchez in the opposite goal. The goalkeeper kept the suspense in the series by covering completely.
To do this.
Until minute 88, when Brian Rodríguez marked a free kick. A goal that also sealed the way to the semi-finals.
Who will America face in the Best Four Phase? Everything depends on the results of the matches between Toluca Vs. Tigres (1-4 overall so far) and Chivas Vs. Atlas (0-1) which will be played this Sunday.
Of all those teams, only the number-no Atlas will face the best of the best over the first 17 days, being the worst-graded in the tournament’s regular stage, if they advance: Monterrey.
Monterrey also secured a semi-final ticket after defeating Santos Laguna 2–0.
