US warns of possible terrorist attack in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD ( Associated Press) — The US embassy in Islamabad warned Sunday of a possible terrorist attack on a prominent hotel in Pakistan’s capital, as the city was already on high alert after a suicide attack days earlier.

The embassy said in its notice that the US government has information that “unidentified persons are planning an attack on the Islamabad Marriott Hotel during the holidays.” He also forbade his employees from visiting that hotel during the holidays.

In addition, the diplomatic mission asked its staff not to travel to and from Islamabad during holidays, unless strictly necessary.

Two days ago a suicide bomber detonated his explosives in a residential area of the capital, killing a policeman and injuring 10 others. The explosion occurred when police officers ordered a taxi to stop to inspect it. According to the police, a passenger sitting on the back seat detonated the explosives, causing the vehicle to explode.

Pakistani Taliban militants, who are separate from but affiliated with the Afghan Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Islamabad administration has since declared a state of alert, banning public rallies or processions, even as campaigns for upcoming local elections are underway. Police has intensified patrolling at check posts and checking of vehicles has also been intensified.

In September 2008 a suicide bomb attack occurred at the Islamabad Marriott, which was one of the deadliest such attacks in the Pakistani capital. The attackers approached a truck at the entrance of the hotel and detonated their explosives, killing 63 people and injuring 250.
