SYDNEY ( Associated Press) — Frances Tiafoe defeated Britain’s Daniel Evans 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday to send the United States into the semifinals of the mixed team tournament United Cup.
Tiafoe’s victory gave the Americans a 3–1 lead in the best-of-five contest in the final in Sydney. The two teams will later meet in a mixed doubles match, with the United States having already qualified for the tournament stage starting on Friday at the city’s Ken Rosewall Arena.
Earlier, world number three Jessica Pegula defeated Harriet Dart 6-2, 6-0 in just 57 minutes to put the US ahead 2-1. Madison Keys started the day with a set down to beat Katie Swan 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 but Britain’s Cameron Norrie, ranked 14th in the world, won 6-4, 5-7. equated to 6-4 to Taylor Fritz.
For his part, Matteo Berretini beat Hubert Hurkaj 6–4, 3–6, 6–3 to put Italy 2–1 up against Poland in Brisbane. But the Polish team won the fourth set to level the deciding mixed doubles match at 2-2.
Earlier, world number one Inga Swiatek leveled the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan, while Lorenzo Musetti beat Daniel Michalski 6-1, 6-1.
In the third final, in the western city of Perth, Greece and Croatia were tied 1–1 with the singles and mixed doubles remaining.
Donna Vekic beat Borna Coric 6-0, 6-7(4), 7-5 in her sixth match to put Croatia ahead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Despina Papamichael and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The winner of the tournament will come out of doubles played between Friday and Sunday by the three winners from each city and the best graded of the others in Sydney.
