USA Elections 2024: Electoral calendar explained and dates to consider

There is still a year left until the presidential election in the United States, however, the election campaign has already begun.

This Wednesday, September 27, the second primary debate of the Republican Party will take place before the 2024 election; while the Democrats will do the same between November and December, although there is no precise date for this.

When is the US presidential election?

The elections to choose the country’s next president are scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024. However, there are still many dates to consider before the big day. So, we are sharing with you the election calendar.

Primary election

Once the Parties finish their respective debates, they will give way for the primary elections. Through this, citizens vote for the candidate they want to represent each party. The voting period runs from January 15 to June 8, 2024 and the date varies from state to state. Conventions

After the primary election, the Democratic and Republican Parties hold conventions to reveal the candidates who will face each other for the presidency of the country based on the results of the primaries. The Republican Convention is scheduled for July 15-18, while the Democratic Convention will take place on August 19-22.

Presidential debates

Once the candidates are known, the individual presidential debates will be set. There is no official date yet, but it is expected to take place between September and October, like the previous elections.

Vote in the Electoral College

The president of the United States is not directly elected by popular vote, it is the Electoral College that has the final say. The college is composed of 538 voting members; The more population a state has, the more voters it has.

As such, the candidate who wins the popular vote in each state takes all of the electoral votes in that state, except for Nebraska and Maine. The Electoral College vote is on December 17.

Winner’s Certification

The Electoral College will meet in January 2025 in the country’s Congress to count the electoral votes and confirm the victory of the winner. Afterwards, a change of power takes place.
