USA: found 7 victims of a chocolate explosion

The bodies of seven victims of a massive explosion at a crime factory in a small town in eastern Pennsylvania have been recovered, police said.

West Reading Mayor Samantha Kaag said in a statement late Sunday that the names of the deceased will not be released until authorities have confirmed all the families have been identified.

“Please understand that this disaster is devastating, but we are truly grateful that we can bring closure to the families of the next few days,” Kaag said.

Police Chief Wayne Holben told reporters shortly after 9 a.m. that rescuers found the bodies earlier in the afternoon and are believed to be the two missing people who were reported missing the night before. Their identities have been confirmed by the Berks County coroner’s office, he said.

One of the victims was found around 6:50 a.m., the other around 8:20 a.m., Holben added. This brings the number of dead to seven.

Kaag previously confirmed to The Associated Press that his body was found Sunday morning by rescuers, and the Berks County coroner confirmed that he was dead. The coroner could not confirm the identity of that person, Kaag added.

Holben had previously confirmed the discovery of a fourth body under the rubble of the RM Palmer Co. factory in West Reading, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) west of Philadelphia.

Holben asked the crowd to pray and promised rescuers and officials “will not rest until they determine where each person is affected by this tragedy”, from the explosion on Friday at 5 pm.

Rescuers used thermal imaging equipment and dogs to find the remains of the blast that destroyed one building and damaged another. Crews were removing the debris with heavy machinery, Holben said.

Fire Chief Chad Meyer said late Saturday that the chance of finding survivors had “diminished” because of the force of the explosion and the passage of time.

Kaag said the authorities “hope to get some answers and get some ransoms to comfort people and give them comfort.”

Officials said they did not know the condition of the woman who was pulled alive from the rubble Saturday morning. Kaag added that she was appearing in the second panel and was found in “expected things”. A dog found her, and rescuers pulled her out.

Authorities said they had no information on the condition of those who were hospitalized. The reading hospital said it received 10 injured and transferred two to other facilities. Two others were of good and equal disposition, and the others were dismissed.

State and local firefighters are still scanning the scene to try to determine the cause of the explosion.
