A dinosaur skeleton has gone under the hammer in New York. Gorgosaurus bones were discovered in the United States in 2018.
A Gorgosaurus skeleton has been sold in New York for about $6 million. Auction house Sotheby’s said it fetched $6.1 million at auction on Thursday. It was not initially announced who bought the skeleton, which was about three meters high and about seven meters long, which was discovered in the US state of Montana in 2018. According to the auction house, this was the first skeleton of such a dinosaur to be put up for auction.
Scientists say that Gorgosaurus, which lived more than 70 million years ago, was related to and similar to Tyrannosaurus rex, but much smaller. Most of the Gorgosaurus fossils have been found in Canada, and all the remains found so far are in public collections.
In May, a skeleton of the dinosaur species Deinonychus antirrhopus was auctioned in New York for about $12 million. In 2020, a skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex raised over $30 million. However, many experts are criticizing the auction of scientifically valuable skeletons.
