USA Name Team for 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier – Emerging Cricket

USA Cricket announced 14 for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier B set for Zimbabwe from 11 July to 17 July.

Cameron Stevenson is set to make his T20I debut for the United States, and Marty Kane, Vatsal Vaghela, will return after an outstanding performance against Ireland in December. Jaskaran Malhotra will also be making a comeback in the team after recovering from a finger injury sustained in a practice match ahead of the Cricket World Cup League Two in Houston last month. Veteran pacer Rusty Theron, who took eight wickets in five innings at 18.25 in Houston Cricket World Cup League Two, has also returned to the T20 side after being ruled out of the Ireland series due to injury.

Although the qualifiers will be the first T20I action for the US since the series-sharing series against Ireland in Florida in December, the US is nothing but cold. Two grueling Cricket World Cup League Two ODI tripartite matches ended last week in the sweltering heat of Houston, Texas, with the United States walking away as the only team out of five from any series with a winning record.

Ryan Scott, Xavier Marshall, Jesse Singh and Karima Gore were dropped from the named T20 squad ahead of the Ireland series in December. USA U19 all-rounders Ritwik Behera and Ali Sheikh, who were included in the T20 roster in December after some players fell ill with Covid, also find themselves out of the squad.

The qualifiers are divided into two groups of four, and the United States find themselves in Group A along with Jersey, Singapore and hosts Zimbabwe. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals. From there, the two finalists will face each other in the final to determine their group placements at the 2022 T20 World Cup, where they will join the Qualifier A finalists, UAE and Ireland.

In preparation, USA will play more practice matches (six) in Windhoek and Harare than the official T20I qualifier games (five). Since the ICC granted international status to all T20 matches between members (Associate or Full Members) in 2019, USA Men have played a total of 16 T20i, of which only four were not T20 World Cup qualifiers. The classification of six practice games as practice matches would mean that this trend, a common practice in the world of Associate Members, would continue.

USA’s first warm-up match will be in Windhoek on 30 June and their first qualifier match on 11 July in Bulawayo.
