USA: Utah government restricts minors’ access to social networks

In the state of Utah, the government enacted two laws that would restrict the access of children and young people to some social networks, such as TikTok, against those applications considered addictive.

Governor Spencer Cox, of the Republican party, has promulgated regulations that would allow young people to access parental control over any networks, and also prevent them from being with them between 10:30 a.m.

Likewise, it has been established that parents have access to the accounts of their children, and rules for people who want to file lawsuits about the damages they want, according to their emotions, have been reported through the platforms.

The goal of the Utah authorities is to prevent tech companies from luring minors into their applications through what are described as addictive functions.

Tech companies have gained ground in recent years, especially in the United States, but lawmakers have begun to address the issue of data privacy and data security.

The laws in Utah were signed on the same day that TikTok CEO, Shou Zi Chew of Singapore, testified before Congress about the social network’s alleged harmful effects on the mental health of minors.

Meanwhile, other political states such as Arkansas, Texas, Ohio and Louisiana are putting together similar proposals, as is New Jersey. For its part, California – led by Democrat Gavin Newsom – passed a law last year that requires technology companies to find the safety of children first.
