USC No. 16 beats Long Beach 73-62, improving 10-0 AP News

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Southern California played the first half before realizing its age-old axiom in college basketball: No matter who you are, don’t underestimate your opponent.

With Isaiah Mobley scoring 21 points and 12 rebounds, the 16th-placed Trojans retreated early in the second half on Sunday on their way to a 73-62 victory over Long Beach State.

“These teams come in and think it’s their Super Cup,” said Drew Peterson, who added 15 points for the USC. “A game can take us back to a big time, so we knew we had to block. Luckily, we responded immediately.”

The Trojans (10-0) continued their best start since the 2016-17 season, when they opened 14-0. Max Agbonkpolo had 11 points, while Mobley scored his fourth double in five games.

Joel Murray led Beach (3-7) with 14 points. Colin Slater had 12 points and Romelle Mansel had 10 points, three dunks and 7 rebounds in the second half.

In the first half, no team was able to advance more than seven points. Beach outscored USC 12-9, with Peterson leading three before hitting a 3-pointer to hit a break signal for the 38-all tie.

“We expressed our views during the break as the coaching staff and we continued,” USC coach Andy Anfield said. “It simply came to our notice then. You have to get out and get out. “

The Trojans did just that, opening the second half 14-0, six points from Mobley and five points from Chevez Goodwin to take the lead 52-38.

“It’s another good learning experience for us,” Peterson said. “We don’t want it to cost us a big game,” he said. It’s always good to face some challenges and see how we cope with it.

Long Beach missed the first six shots of that section before Slater hit the jumper. Mobley then canceled out Peterson’s pass and Agbonkpolo hit a 3-point shot in a row, which took the USC to 13 points.

The beach was followed by a series of baskets by Slater, including a 3-point, 62-54 score. But Peterson responded with a ninth 3 point from USC and the Beach was effectively done.

“They came on in the second half and we missed a few good looks,” said Beach Coach Dan Monson. “Then it snowed and they controlled the game. We kept fighting and we had a chance, but they were better than us when we needed to be. ”

Long Beach State finished 38% of shots, and this season kept the USC’s every opponent’s catch series at less than 40%.

Long Beach State: The Beach dropped 0-2 against ranked teams and lost to № at the time. 2 100-79 in the second game of the UCLA season.

USC: The Trojans have two major neutral court games against Georgia Tech and Oklahoma before the Pac-12 game resumes on Dec. 30. They won 5-0 on the road, Temple, Florida Gulf Coast and Washington. The state also has neutral court victories against St. Joseph and San Diego in Anaheim.

New USC football coach Lincoln Riley was greeted with a standing ovation on the eve of the break. He went out on the court and told fans who wanted the title what he wanted to hear: “We came here for a reason and it’s to win the championship at the USC.”

In September, when coach Clay Helton was sacked and Donte Williams took a temporary position, the Trojans played a total of 4-8 and 3-6 in a Pac-12 game.

“We know it takes a lot of work,” Riley said. “We promise to do our part.”

The previously announced Riley presence helped the USC attract the largest crowd of the season at 5,561. That’s almost 2,000 more than the average 3,754 games in the first four home games.

“It’s great to have him here,” Peterson said.

On Sunday, Ellis turned 21 years old. He missed his first four shots, making it 0 to 14 Dating defeated East Kentucky on Tuesday, but finished with eight points in front of family and friends. Malian reserve Bubakar Coulibaly celebrated his 22nd birthday but did not join the game.

In the last meeting of the teams in 2019, Joshua Morgan, who played for the Beach, did not score in nine minutes.

Long Beach State: It hosts La Sierra on Saturday in its final home game, Jan. 8.

USC: Includes three games hosted by UC Irvine on Wednesday.
