Air Force Academy, Colo. – Calvin Tyler Jr. scored 61 yards to lead with just four minutes to play to seal a 49-45 win over Utah State in Saturday night’s Mountain West Conference opener fixed.
The Aggies, who had won just a year earlier, won their third straight game to start the season for the first time since 1978.
Tyler made 19 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lead Utah State, while Logan Bonner completed 21 of 34 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Peasley threw three second-half touchdown passes, including a 72-yard bomb with 5:51 to Deven Thompkins with 9:51 to pull the Eggies to within touchdown of the Falcons, 45-40 .
Air Force took a 10–0 lead in the first quarter, but Bonner engineered a 13-play, 71-yard drive capped by Tyler’s first touchdown, then 92 yards to the Aggies in 11 plays in his next series. , giving him a 13- lead of 10 after beating Brandon Bowling from six yards.
Hazick Daniels scored in the second quarter on a 56-yard touchdown pass with Micah Davis to put Air Force back in front and Dane Kinamon just before halftime to put the Falcons 24-13 ahead.
Bonner led the Aggies on another long drive to start the second half, hitting Justin McGriff with a 24-yard scoring pass to make it 24-20.
Emmanuel Mitchell scored 51- and 55-yard touchdown runs in the third quarter, leading the Falcons to 38–34 in the final period, and Daniels taking a 45–34 lead with a 39-yard touchdown dash.
Paisley responded with his bomb-covered three-play drive to Thompkins.
Thompkins finished with nine catches for 188 yards for Utah State and Bowling pulled in nine for 136.
Daniels led Air Force (2-1) with 182 yards on 6-of-12 passing and added 95 yards on 13 carries. Mitchell did it 11 times for 133 yards and Brad Roberts did it 21 times for 113.
