Vatican Press Office Says Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Is “Absolutely Clear and Cautious”

(CNN) — Pope Emeritus Benedict managed to rest on Wednesday night and is “absolutely lucid and alert” this Thursday, Matteo Bruni, director of the Vatican press office, said in a statement.

“He is very clear and alert and today, although he remains in a serious condition, he is currently in a stable condition,” Bruni said.

“Pope Francis renews his invitation to pray for them and accompany them in these difficult hours,” he added.

Pope Emeritus Is “Very Ill”

Pope Francis said on 28 December that his predecessor was “very ill” and asked for prayers for the 95-year-old former pope.

“I would like to ask everyone for a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict who supports the Church in its silence. He is very ill,” Francis said during his general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday.

“We ask the Lord to comfort him and to sustain him to the end in this testimony of love for the Church.”

In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world by making the almost unprecedented decision to resign from his position, citing “advanced age”.

Benedict’s proclamation marked the first time in nearly 600 years that a pope had resigned. The last pope to resign before his death was Gregory XII, who resigned in 1415 to end a civil war within the Catholic Church in which more than one person claimed to be pope.
