BOSTON ( Associated Press) — Alex Verdugo tied the game with an eighth single inning and added a two-run hit to cap three runs in the 10th inning as the Boston Red Sox won 6-5 Saturday night.
Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo gave the Yankees a 5-3 lead with RBI doubles in Jake Diekman’s 10th.
Jeter Downs, named after former Yankees captain Derek Jeter, had a single RBI in the lower half of Wandy Peralta (2-2). Thus, he got his first hit in the majors.
Third baseman Josh Donaldson juggled a Xander Bogaerts grounder that looked ideal for a game-ending double play. He eventually only managed one at first.
With runners in second and third and two out, Verdugo excelled in the right field. Rob Refsnyder scored and Downs, who hit the plate just before Joey Gallo’s pitch.
In the morning, Downs was in the Triple-A Worcester roster before being called up to the major league roster.
Verdugo tied the score at 3-3 with a ninth inning from Clay Holmes, who wasted two of his 18 defensive opportunities.
Boston broke a four-game losing streak. He went 10-20 in his last games against his obnoxious rivals in the American League East.
For the Yankees, the Venezuelan Gleyber Torres 5-1 with a run scheduled.
For the Red Sox, the Puerto Rican Christian Vázquez 5-0. The Mexican Verdugo 5-3 with three RBIs. Dominican Franchise Cordero 2-0.
