Verstappen takes Belgium GP after starting 14th

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium ( Associated Press) – Max Verstappen bounced back from 14th place to win the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday and deal another blow in the race for the Formula One title.

After winning the Hungarian Grand Prix in tenth place, the Dutch driver put on another impressive performance to move closer to the second consecutive championship, taking a lead of nearly 100 points in the last eight races.

Verstappen took the lead in the Spa circuit in 12th out of 44 laps. He also earned a bonus point for the fastest lap.

His third consecutive win this season was his ninth and 29th of his career. He leads the championship with a margin of 98 points over Mexican Sergio Pérez, his Red Bull teammate, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

“Checo” Perez finished second, overtaking Leclerc in the drivers’ position. Carlos Sainz Jr. started from pole for Ferrari and finished a disappointing third.

Leclerc started 15th and crossed the finish line in fifth place behind George Russell’s Mercedes. After the race, Leclerc received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane and was relegated to sixth.

The penalty awarded fifth place to Alpine’s Fernando Alonso.

Leclerc was disappointed about his chances of fighting for the title.

“I didn’t even know, nobody told me anything,” said Leclerc, surprised at the approval. I don’t understand punishment?

Catch up with Verstappen?

“I’m not thinking much about the championship right now. Red Bull was on another planet today,” Leclerc added. “We have to find out why they are so superior.”

Lewis Hamilton’s bid for a sixth straight podium was set on the first lap when he brushed up against Alonso’s car and briefly blew himself up.

“What a fool! Locking the door from outside,” shouted Alonso. “We make a big start, but he only knows how to drive when he starts first”
