Veterans fundraiser recruits Bruce Springsteen and John Stewart

NEW YORK (AP) – Long before Bruce Springsteen stepped onto the stage of the annual Stand Up for Heroes. In New York, Bob and Lee Woodruff joked about how they get Boss to perform so often.

“Sometimes I did things that I’m not proud of,” joked Lee Woodruff.

“Wait, what is this?” Bob asked, laughing.

“I’ll tell you later,” Lee retorted.

Springsteen missed it only once in 15 years of running the event, in 2017, when he performed on his Broadway show.

“We don’t need to ask him. He’s coming to see us, ”said Bob Woodruff of the event, which is raising money to help injured veterans and their families. This year’s event at Lincoln Center raised $ 4.6 million.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation was founded by a 60-year-old ABC journalist after he was seriously injured by an improvised explosive device while covering the 2006 Iraq war.

The show on Monday also featured John Stewart, Brandi Carlisle, Grace Gaustad and Sing Harlem. Comedians Jim Gaffigan, Nate Bargatze and Donnell Rawlings also performed. The organization has raised money through ticket sales and auction sales and is part of the New York Comedy Festival.

Nikki Glazer, who was also on the lineup, says she was honored to support the charity, but she is concerned that her poignant, attacking humor is not always appropriate.

“There is a part of me that doesn’t want to make people feel uncomfortable with some material. But at the same time, I don’t think they need me to be soft or restrained, ”she said. “So, I’m fighting it.”

New York Governor Katie Hochul was also in attendance and said she is committed to ensuring that returning military personnel do not fall through the cracks in society.

“They may not realize that they have PTSD. They may not be aware that they have emotional and psychological wounds that they are almost ashamed to talk about. We must remove stigma and make services such as telemedicine available, ”said Hochul.

The event was attended by active and former military personnel, including five members of a Marine Corps company who participated in a deadly ambush in Kabul that killed 13 US troops in August during the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

Bob Woodruff’s own injuries associated with the Iraq war created a bond with wounded soldiers, including one of the evening’s laureates, former Staff Sergeant Brad Lang.

Lang lost his legs in 2011 after an IED blast and spent nine months recovering at the Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C. …

“I think it’s great. He’s someone who can treat us the same way we can treat him. And I think it’s a closeness that can’t be shared with many other organizations,” Lang said.

And who was he most excited about seeing the performance?

– Of course, Bruce Springsteen. I mean, come on, ”Lang said.
